Cultural Getaways Group

This group gives participants the chance to get a fresh look at art and culture: exploring the ancient Roman city of Barcino, strolling through the medieval Ciutat Vella, discovering Catalan modernism and much more.

This activity is intended for staff members and students at UIC Barcelona as well as people directly related to them.

Quarterly outings throughout Catalonia on Saturday mornings.

You will be accompanied by our exceptional guide: Dr Marta Crispí, art historian and lecturer for the Faculty of Humanities.

Habsburg Barcelona

On this walking tour you’ll learn about the history of Barcelona in the 16th and 17th centuries. We will stop to look at the most important Renaissance and Baroque buildings, such as the Lieutenant's Palace, the Generalitat Palace, St. Sever Church, Bethlehem Church and Sant Creu Hospital.

  • Where? Stairs of Barcelona Cathedral. 

Frederic Marès Museum

A museum in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter specialising in sculpture and collector’s items.

 

We will have the unique opportunity to view a selection of Hispanic sculpture from ancient times right up the 19th century, as well as some of the art produced by Frederic Marès. Moreover, there are a large number of collector’s items on display documenting ways of life and customs from the past: from photographs to toys, relics and jewellery.

Andy Warhol's Pop Art

The Campbell Soup cans and the portrayals of popular icons such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and David Bowie comprise the artistic identity of Andy Warhol, who has now disembarked in the Catalan capital.

Catalan Romanesque art at the MNAC

We will pay a visit to the 11th and 13th-century Romanesque art collection, taking advantage of the fact that Catalonia is one of the richest territories in terms of mural paintings inside Romanesque churches, panel paintings, sculptures, etc. Examples of the works on display include the paintings from the churches of Sant Climent in Taüll and Sant Joan in Boí, as well as stone sculptures and wood carvings.

Modernism by Ramon Casas

Celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the painter with a visit to the temporary exhibition “Ramon Casas: A Much Yearned Modernity”, in the Maricel Museum in Sitges. You can enjoy his works of art – paintings, posters, drawings – and a large number of vintage photographs which will help you get a sense of the period in which he lived.

Cultural outing through the Gothic Quarter

The route starts at Barcelona Cathedral. We will then visit Plaça Sant Felip Neri and have a look at two guild houses (one for shoemakers and another one for boilermakers). We will then explore the Jewish quarter and Plaça Sant Jaume to check out the Gothic façades of the buildings flanking the square: Barcelona City Hall and the Palau de la Generalitat, seat of the Catalan Government. We will continue on to the Basilica of Saints Justus and Pastor and Carrer Lladó before ending our tour in the district of La Ribera where we will visit Santa Maria del Mar and El Born.

Velázquez and the Golden Age

The temporary exhibition “Velázquez and the Golden Age” offers insight into the world of the Seville-born artist and his artistic influences. All through paintings by him and other contemporary artists.

Sagrada Família

The Sagrada Família, built in the beautiful area of ​​the Eixample neighborhood and a reflection of Catalan modernism, this temple is a synthesis of all the arts in a structural and logical set. It has become a symbol of the city and part of the seva urban silhouette, it is a referent of the architecture and it is declared Patrimoni de la Humanitat.

Catalan Modernism: Casa Amatller

We will explain the story behind the renowned “Mansana de la Discordia” (‘Block of Discord’) and explore the house of the chocolatier Antoni Amatller, an architectural masterpiece by Modernist architect Puig i Cadafalch. We will visit the first floor where he lived with his daughter and observe its magnificent interior design: Mosaics, stained glass windows, sculptures, paintings and more, as well as his Roman glass collection and other artistic wonders.

Catalan Modernism: Eixample and La Mansana de la Discòrdia

  • We will talk about what is known as La Mansana de la Discòrdia: A group of houses in the Eixample district consisting of buildings such as Casa Lleó i Morera by Domènech i Montaner; Casa Mulleras by Enric Sagnier; Casa Bonet de Marcel·lí Coquillat, Casa Amatller by Josep Puig i Cadafalch; and Casa Batlló by Antoni Gaudí.

    The five buildings were renovations of existing homes that had been built by master builders of the city. Using these very different houses, we will review 19th century architecture and its styles.

El Palau Güell

  • Where? At the entrance to Palau Güell (Carrer Nou de la Rambla, 3-5).

Turner exhibition at the MNAC

  • Turner, recognised as the best landscape painter of the Romantic period for his mastery of light, colour and atmosphere, paints the immense forces of nature that already at that time of great change, at the beginning of the first industrial revolution, began to be threatened. Through around a hundred works, paintings, drawings, sketches and prints, the exhibition traces the development of Turner’s compositions, from the first sketches to the watercolours, oils and final prints.
  • Where?  At the entrance of the MNAC (Parc de Montjuïc).

You can attend any scheduled getaway, as long as you fill out the registration form. Places are limited for this activity and only one companion per person is allowed. Reservations are made in strict order of registration.

Two weeks before each getaway, the registration form for the upcoming getaway will be announced the University's usual communication channels.
