Education students receive first aid training in a workshop adapted to classroom situations

The Faculty of Education Sciences has once again organised first aid training for students, with the aim of equipping future teachers with the tools needed to respond to emergencies and urgent situations. The session is delivered by practising professionals, thanks to collaboration with the department of Nursing at the Sant Cugat Campus.

Students from the Bachelor’s Degrees in Primary Education and Pre-Primary Education have taken part in the workshop, which comprises two blocks: a three-hour training session leading to a first aid certificate, and a second block focusing on school-specific emergencies. “Synergies with the field of health are essential in the training of future teachers,” explained Dr Mónica Fernández, vice-dean of the Faculty.

As in any workplace or learning environment, a teacher must be prepared to deal with unexpected situations that may affect children’s health. In light of this, the workshop has prepared university students to respond to various medical conditions, such as bleeding wounds, haemorrhages, contusions and even fractures. It also provides them with the knowledge to administer certain medications in situations such as an allergic reaction.

“We give them the basic tools to be able to act until emergency services arrive,” said Dr Jordi Castillo, lecturer and director of the Master's Degree in Emergency and Urgent Healthcare at UIC Barcelona, and the person responsible for designing this tailored workshop for Education students. He also highlighted that the two trainers delivering the course are practising nurses at Bellvitge Hospital, where they deal with emergencies on a daily basis.

“Children’s health must be considered from all angles. This includes eating well, taking exercise, developing healthy relationships and also being in a safe environment, both physically and emotionally,” said Mónica Fernández. The lecturer also noted that this training has been compulsory for the past four years and is included in the curriculum for students, forming part of the competencies covered in two subjects on the Pre-Primary and Primary Education degree programmes.

The Faculty of Education Sciences is located on the Sant Cugat Campus, where Education students share space with those from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. This setting fosters comprehensive training through teaching, research and practice, helping to develop professionals committed to improving society.
