Introduction
Meeting the clinical needs of children requires extensive knowledge of various dental techniques—including prevention, behavior management for pediatric patients, pulp and restorative treatments for primary and permanent teeth, dental materials, and the management of dental trauma. Children must be treated differently than adults; therefore, it is essential to understand their emotional and psychological needs, as well as their processes of emotional change and social maturation.
Pre-course requirements
Aimed at dentists and stomatologists.
Objectives
The objective of this clinical residency in pediatric dentistry is to address the most important, practical, and useful topics in the field—such as restorative and pulp treatments for primary and young permanent dentition, space maintainers, pediatric patient behavior management and sedation.

Syllabus
The main theoretical topics to be covered are:
Introduction to pediatric dentistry. Clinical history of the pediatric patient.
Basic anatomical concepts in pediatric dentistry.
Dental developmental anomalies.
Anesthesia in pediatric dentistry.
Isolation of the operating field in pediatric dentistry.
Behavior management of the pediatric patient.
Prevention in pediatric dentistry. Infant oral health.
Caries in the pediatric patient. Early Childhood Caries. Medication-induced caries.
Materials in pediatric dentistry.
Restorative treatments for primary and permanent dentition.
Pulpal treatments for primary and young permanent dentition.
Trauma to primary and young permanent dentition.
Extractions and space maintainers.
Pediatric dental emergencies.
Periodontics in pediatric dentistry.
Oral medicine in pediatric dentistry.
Patients with special needs and syndromes.
Basic concepts of speech therapy.
Basic concepts of pharmacology and sedation in pediatric patients.

Teaching and learning activities
In person
Lectures delivered by the teaching staff, based on scientific articles.
Attendance is mandatory; arriving more than 10 minutes after the start time counts as an absence.
Only absences due to serious illness, accident, or the death of a first- or second-degree relative will be considered excused.International students are permitted to be absent for government appointments that cannot be scheduled outside of class
hours.
In the event of an absence, the student must email the supporting documentation to the course instructor, as well as to the
Master's Program Director and Coordinator. Accumulating three or more unexcused absences will result in a failing grade for the
first exam session; the student will then be required to make up this part of the course during the extraordinary exam session.
Situations resulting in a score of 0 for the daily assessment:
- Unexcused absence.
- Unexcused late arrival of more than 10 minutes. If a student accumulates three instances of lateness during the semester,
they must complete an assignment specified by the course instructor.
- Failure to submit required assignments (clinical cases, literature reviews, SEOP poster etc.).
Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
At the end of the first and second semester there is a theoretical exam that must be passed to obtain the clinical residency degree. This exam is a short question and is passed with a 5. If you fail the theoretical exam, a make-up exam will be carried out. The grade obtained in each exam will be worth 50%.
