Introduction

This subject presents the concept of education and its development, taking into account the various educational models and pedagogical thinking until today. We'll study the different pedagogical theories, the educational institutions and the the laws that shape formal education.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CE5: Analyze the historical characteristics of the teaching profession, its current situation, its future perspectives, and its relationship with the social reality of each historical period.
  • CB9: Ensure that students are able to communicate their conclusions, as well as the knowledge and underlying reasoning that supports them, to both specialist and non-specialist audiences in a clear and unambiguous manner.
  • CG4: Present ideas effectively in both oral and written forms, adapting to different communication styles and types of activities.
  • CG6: Integrate and use Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) effectively and responsibly across different fields.
  • CT6: Promote inclusive situations and environments that support sustainable development by creating effective, responsible, and inclusive contexts at all levels.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Identify the legal and social frameworks within which the education system and secondary education operate, and carry out teaching practice consistent with these frameworks.
  • Adapt everyday teaching practice to the social context in which the school is located.

Syllabus

  • Historical evolution of the education system.
  • The current context of the Spanish education system.

(These two content areas are divided into nine subtopics, which can be found on the course Moodle platform.)

Teaching and learning activities

  • The following will be carried out:
    • Lectures for the presentation of theoretical content.
    • More practical sessions involving debates and other interactive activities.

The learning activities will include:

  • Online lectures.
  • Online practical classes.
  • Independent study and individual work.

Evaluation systems and criteria

The assessment system will consist of:

  1. Online examination with open-ended questions (40% of the final course grade).
  2. Online presentation of assignments or submission through video presentations (20%).
  3. Multiple-choice examination (40%).
