Introduction

The Interdisciplinary II course aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the comprehensive management of periodontal and implant patients from a multidisciplinary perspective. Throughout the course, complex clinical situations requiring interaction between periodontology and other dental disciplines will be analysed, promoting diagnostic skills, treatment planning, clinical decision-making and appropriate treatment sequencing. Particular emphasis will be placed on evidence-based clinical reasoning and interdisciplinary case discussion.

Pre-course requirements

Students are recommended to have successfully completed the previous courses of the Master’s programme related to periodontal and implant diagnosis, treatment planning and therapy, and to have the basic knowledge required for the interpretation and discussion of interdisciplinary clinical cases.

Objectives

  • Integrate knowledge of periodontology and implant dentistry with other dental disciplines in the planning of complex cases.
  • Develop diagnostic and decision-making skills in interdisciplinary clinical situations.
  • Establish an appropriate treatment sequence according to the specific needs of each patient.
  • Promote critical clinical reasoning and evidence-based decision-making.
  • Encourage effective communication and coordination among the different dental specialties involved in patient care.

Syllabus

  • Interdisciplinary relationship between periodontology, orthodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics and implant dentistry.
  • Planning and sequencing of periodontal-orthodontic treatment in complex cases.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of endodontic-periodontal lesions.
  • Integration of periodontal considerations into prosthetic and restorative treatment planning.
  • Interdisciplinary implant treatment planning: implant selection, three-dimensional positioning and type of implant-supported rehabilitation.
  • Application of digital planning and guided surgery in implant dentistry.
  • Planning and fabrication of implant-supported provisional restorations.
  • Prevention, diagnosis and management of implant-related prosthetic complications.
  • Periodontal and peri-implant maintenance in patients undergoing interdisciplinary treatment.
  • Discussion and resolution of complex clinical cases from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

The teaching methodology will combine theoretical sessions and interactive seminars with the discussion and resolution of interdisciplinary clinical cases. Active student participation will be encouraged through the analysis of clinical situations, treatment planning, discussion of therapeutic sequences and evidence-based clinical decision-making.

Training activities will include:

  • Lectures and seminars.
  • Presentation, analysis and discussion of interdisciplinary clinical cases.
  • Treatment planning sessions.
  • Reading and critical appraisal of scientific literature.
  • Independent student work for the preparation of cases and seminars.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

Assessment will be continuous and will evaluate the achievement of the learning outcomes through different activities. Active participation in seminars and case discussions, interdisciplinary analysis and treatment planning skills, the application of knowledge to clinical situations, and the justification of therapeutic decisions based on scientific evidence will be taken into account.

Assessment methods may include:

  • Participation and engagement in seminars and discussion sessions.
  • Presentation and defence of interdisciplinary clinical cases.
  • Resolution of clinical cases and treatment-planning exercises.
  • Practical activities and/or assignments related to the course contents.
  • Written or oral examinations assessing the knowledge acquired.
