Introduction

This module aims to introduce the necessary basic surgical knowledge to recent graduates, as well as to dentists who wish to acquire skills in the field of oral surgery. The objective is to provide clinical and surgical knowledge that allows for the assessment and resolution of common surgical situations in oral and dentoalveolar surgery.

Pre-course requirements

Having passed the first course of the MORE program (University Master's Degree in Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry / Master's Degree in Advanced Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry)

Objectives

This program aims to equip students with the surgical knowledge necessary to perform the most common surgical procedures in oral surgery, and to know how to act in different situations to resolve or refer cases appropriately based on their complexity. Furthermore, it will enable them not only to solve medical-surgical problems they may encounter in their daily practice, but also to perform basic and complex surgical treatments within the oral cavity in the field of dentoalveolar surgery.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

The student will be able to: - Diagnose, treat, and resolve the most common surgical procedures in the field of oral surgery. - Know about surgical anatomy. - Know about different radiological techniques. - Diagnosticate various oral pathologies. - Diagnosticate and understand complementary examinations. - Establish a treatment plan. - Understand basic surgical treatments and advanced surgical treatment (impacted wisdom tooth extraction, pre-prosthetic surgeries, biopsies, etc.) - And they will learn about and will be able to treat complications of oral surgeries.

Syllabus

 
  • Application of theoretical knowledge to perform appropriate patient care (CUO)
  • Operation of the cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanner
  • Basic surgical techniques: incisions, sutures, etc.
  • Pharmacology
  • Simple, complex, and surgical extractions
  • Pre-prosthesis surgery (excision of exostoses, tori, etc.) 
  • Biopsies
  • Frenectomies
  • Prevention and treatment of surgical complications

Teaching and learning activities

In person



  • Clinical practice, which involves visiting patients to develop a diagnosis and treatment plan that allows for safe and predictable oral surgeries.
  • Lectures and practical seminars.
  • Knowledge of laser technology in oral surgery.
  • Knowledge of nitrous oxide sedation in dentistry.
