Introduction
The course Assessment, Diagnosis and Intervention in Family and Couple Contexts aims to introduce students to a systemic and relational understanding of psychological difficulties, exploring the role of bonds, family dynamics and couple relationships in people’s health and well-being.
Throughout the course, students will explore the main foundations of the systemic approach, as well as tools for assessing and understanding relational patterns, family and couple dynamics, and their influence on processes of change.
From a theoretical and practical perspective, the course will address different strategies for assessment, case formulation and intervention with families and couples, fostering the development of a clinical perspective that enables students to understand individual difficulties within the relational systems and contexts in which they occur.
Objectives
The course aims to:
- Introduce students to the foundations of systemic and relational approaches, understanding their main contributions to psychological assessment and intervention.
- Promote a relational understanding of psychological difficulties, considering the influence of bonds, interactional patterns, and family and couple contexts.
- Develop competencies in assessment and clinical formulation within family and couple contexts, integrating individual, relational, and contextual information relevant to understanding the case.
- Develop knowledge and application of systemic intervention tools and strategies, adapting them to the characteristics, needs, and developmental stage of families and couples.
- Develop the ability to identify functional and dysfunctional relational patterns, understanding their influence on the maintenance of difficulties and therapeutic change processes.
- Promote reflective, ethical clinical practice that respects the diversity of family and couple structures and realities, recognising the limits of intervention and appropriate criteria for coordination or referral when necessary.
Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme
- CN03 - Distinguish in depth the psychological nature of human behavior and its disorders, as well as the biological, social, and psychosocial factors influencing health and illness, with special attention to their impact on mental health.
- CN04 - Identify in detail the different models of evaluation and intervention in General Health Psychology, as well as the techniques and procedures derived from them, for addressing behavioral disorders and psychological factors associated with health problems in various contexts, such as the private sector, primary care, community settings, and crisis and emergency situations.
- CP04 - Implement strategies and mechanisms in the clinical and healthcare field to promote gender equality, equity, and respect for diversity, using inclusive and non-discriminatory language in professional practice.
- CP05 - Apply an integral health concept, including its biopsychosocial components, in accordance with the guidelines established by the World Health Organization (WHO).
- CP09 - Manage referral to the corresponding specialist professional, demonstrating knowledge of the role of the general health psychologist in different contexts.
- CP12 - Generate psychological intervention programs based on psychological evaluation and relevant individual and social variables, applying them in different contexts such as the private sector, primary care, community settings, and in crisis and emergency situations.
- HB03 - Integrate in a critical, synthetic, and rigorous manner the knowledge and advances of clinical psychology within the clinical and healthcare field for their effective application in professional practice.
- HB04 - Demonstrate advanced interpersonal communication and emotion management skills with patients, relatives, and caregivers, ensuring person-centered care throughout the entire process of psychological evaluation, diagnosis, intervention, and follow-up.
Learning outcomes of the subject
Students will be able to:
- Distinguish between positive psychology interventions and other appreciative, interactional and systemic psychosocial models for the promotion of individual and community mental health.
- Apply assessment techniques in the family context, adapting the intervention to family dynamics.
- Assess relational patterns, identifying functional and dysfunctional models through the use of genograms and structured interviews.
- Design family therapeutic interventions, including criteria for referral to specialised services, addressing the individual difficulties of the family and/or couple, and promoting well-being and healthy relationships within the family system.
