√40 Indústria + Habitabilitat

Similarly to the previous year, the 2011 Vertical Workshop was concerned with work connected to social emergency situations. On this new occasion, it involved proposing new solutions for young people trying to get onto the property ladder through industrialised construction. This all took place within the social context of a developed country where, currently, having access to housing is extremely difficult. Participation in the process of making access to housing possible in society is one of the main concerns of architects. It makes complete sense to try and help people to get on to the property ladder if we look at the daily reality in our own environment. This social need, which will be complex to resolve, involves architectural work that is not dissimilar to that undertaken in social emergency situations. The planned exercise involves designing an industrialised housing module on a 1:1 scale of 40 m2, defined as a floor with measurements of 6.32x6.32 m (√40x√40), according to the definition of the minimum level of housing admissible in the Decree of Habitability for Catalonia. On the day of the presentation, this module must be built by students in only 15 minutes.
