Student support will be provided through in-person tutorials arranged in advance with the teaching staff. Support may also be provided via institutional email and the channels available on the university’s virtual learning platform.
Tutorials will be intended to address questions related to the course content, the planning and presentation of clinical cases, therapeutic decision-making, and the monitoring of students’ clinical performance.
Introduction
The aim of the Clinical Update II course is to update, integrate, and apply the knowledge acquired by students throughout the Master’s Degree in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry through the analysis, planning, and treatment of clinical cases.
The course covers the different phases of periodontal treatment in a sequential manner, from the initial patient assessment and the control of systemic and local risk factors to the periodontal maintenance phase. Particular attention is paid to patient motivation, oral hygiene instructions, non-surgical periodontal treatment, reevaluation, surgical treatment, and coordination with restorative and implant procedures.
The discussion of clinical cases enables students to integrate the available scientific evidence with clinical experience and the individual characteristics of each patient. Furthermore, supervised clinical treatment allows students to progressively develop autonomy, decision-making skills, and advanced clinical competencies.
Pre-course requirements
To undertake this course, students must:
- Have acquired the theoretical knowledge and clinical competencies corresponding to the previous years of the Master’s programme.
- Understand the fundamentals of the aetiology, diagnosis, classification, and prognosis of periodontal and peri-implant diseases.
- Be able to complete a comprehensive medical and dental history and perform a systematic periodontal examination.
- Understand the principles of basic, surgical, and maintenance periodontal treatment.
- Have sufficient knowledge to interpret diagnostic tests, periodontal records, and radiographic examinations.
- Understand the principles of evidence-based clinical practice.
Objectives
- Update knowledge of the different phases of periodontal treatment.
- Integrate clinical, periodontal, radiographic, and systemic information to establish an appropriate diagnosis and prognosis.
- Design individualised, appropriately sequenced periodontal treatment plans based on scientific evidence.
- Develop a deeper understanding of strategies for patient motivation, health education, and plaque control.
- Identify and control local and systemic risk factors associated with periodontal and peri-implant diseases.
- Correctly apply the different phases of non-surgical and surgical periodontal treatment.
- Integrate periodontal treatment with restorative, prosthodontic, and implant procedures.
- Establish individualised periodontal and peri-implant maintenance programmes.
- Develop clinical reasoning, critical-thinking, and decision-making skills when managing complex cases.
- Promote ethical, safe, interdisciplinary, and patient-centred clinical care.

Teaching and learning activities
In person
The course is delivered entirely in person and combines supervised clinical activity with update sessions and the presentation and discussion of clinical cases.
The main learning activities include:
- Supervised clinical treatment of patients with periodontal and peri-implant conditions.
- Presentation and discussion of clinical cases.
- Update seminars covering the different phases of periodontal treatment.
- Critical review of the scientific literature.
- Problem-solving and clinical decision-making.
- Development of diagnoses, prognoses, and treatment plans.
- Interdisciplinary discussion of complex cases.
- Longitudinal follow-up and assessment of treatment outcomes.
- Tutorials and individualised feedback from the teaching staff.
The methodology encourages active participation, clinical reasoning, the integration of theory and practice, and the progressive development of professional autonomy.
