Introduction

The Faculty of Dentistry at the International University of Catalonia (UIC Barcelona) recognizes the need to offer the dental profession the University Master’s Degree in Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry.

Our University also aims to ensure that students complete their training with a clear understanding of research in the field of dentistry.

Based on this principle, our educational model is focused on achieving the following objectives:

  • To provide students with advanced training in aesthetic restorative dentistry, equipping them with scientific knowledge and specialized surgical skills for application in clinical dental practice.
  • To provide in-depth knowledge of the latest materials and technologies used in aesthetic restorative dentistry, enabling students to select and apply the most innovative and effective solutions according to each patient’s clinical needs.
  • To train students in research methodology, fostering critical thinking and the ability to generate knowledge based on scientific evidence, with the aim of contributing to the advancement of the discipline.

3.1.b) Admission Criteria and Procedures for the Degree Programme

General access routes and requirements for the Master’s degree

Admission of new students to the University Master’s Degree in Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya is governed by the provisions of Article 18 of Royal Decree 822/2021, which establishes the guidelines for access and admission to official university Master’s degree programmes.

Admission to the University Master’s Degree in Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry requires applicants to hold a Bachelor’s degree in Dentistry, or a degree in Medicine and a specialist qualification in Stomatology.

Admission Profile

All candidates who meet the general access routes and requirements for admission to the degree programme may apply. The recommended admission profile is as follows:

  • Degree in Dentistry, or a degree in Medicine with a specialist qualification in Stomatology.
  • B1 level of English according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
  • Interest in science and research.
  • Ability to make decisions efficiently.
  • Empathy.
  • A responsible attitude and sensitivity to the suffering of others.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.

Objectives

General objective

    To train students in research methodology, fostering critical thinking and the ability to generate knowledge based on scientific evidence, with the aim of contributing to the advancement of the discipline.

Teaching Activities and Methodologies 4.2.a) Training Activities

Compulsory and elective subjects

  • Lectures (CM): These are lecture-based sessions in which the lecturer presents a specific topic while encouraging student participation. The aim of these activities is to convey advanced knowledge and stimulate cognitive processes.
  • Case Method for the Analysis and Resolution of Clinical Cases (MC): This activity enables students to discuss and deliberate under the guidance and with the participation of the lecturer. In some activities, the case is presented and resolved within the same learning unit, while in others, the problem is addressed in a subsequent session, allowing students time to gather information, reflect and draw conclusions. Students are encouraged to put their acquired knowledge into practice, integrate new knowledge and deal with the complexity of real-life situations.
  • Laboratory (LAB): These activities are carried out in the University’s simulation laboratories, where students have the opportunity to acquire competencies in the use of instruments and equipment specific to the degree programme. These activities are conducted under the supervision of a lecturer and aim to optimise students’ manual skills and their ability to use specific instruments and equipment.
  • Seminars (SEM): This training activity includes methodologies in which students actively participate in small groups, although they may occasionally work individually, to address and resolve a question posed by the lecturer. In certain cases, this activity may also involve the participation of one or more lecturers, students or experts, either from within or outside the Master’s programme, with expertise in the specific subject area.
  • Independent Study (TAU): This training activity includes work undertaken by students without the presence of a lecturer and related to the different activities of the degree programme, such as preparing clinical cases, studying advanced concepts, preparing for examinations, searching for scientific information, completing individual and group theoretical assignments, undertaking supplementary reading, and planning clinical cases in the digital design computer laboratory.

Evaluation systems and criteria

As an assessment method, at the end of the term, students will take a written examination aimed at evaluating their progress and the acquisition of the knowledge and competencies developed throughout the term.

The examination will consist of approximately ten questions related to the content covered during the term. There may also be a practical laboratory assessment, such as a dental preparation exercise.
