Dr. West Kristian Paraiso is a Beatriu de Pinós Fellow in the NeuroNanoMet group, Department of Biomedical Sciences, UIC Barcelona. His research lies at the intersection of pharmaceutical chemistry, metabolic disorders, and nanomedicine design. He develops polymer- and lipid-based delivery systems for small molecules and nucleic acids, with applications in brain cancer, neuroinflammation, and obesity and metabolic disorders via modulation of hypothalamic lipid metabolism. A pharmacist by training, he obtained his PhD in Pharmaceutical Science from Hokkaido University (Sapporo) and is a visiting researcher at the Innovation Center of Nanomedicine (Kawasaki). He lectures on nanomedicine at the undergraduate level. Outside academic work, his interests include mindfulness practice and playing indoor and beach volleyball.
