Andrés Moreno
Assistant Professor at UIC School of Management
“Technology and AI are extremely powerful tools, but we need knowledge and sound judgement to determine whether the answers they provide are actually correct. That is why mathematical education remains essential. The challenge now is to integrate these new technologies into the way we learn, teach and conduct research. AI is not replacing mathematics: it is changing how we study it.”

FAQ

Title text

FAQS

What will I study on the Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Data Science?

The Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Data Science at UIC Barcelona combines a solid mathematical education with statistics, programming, data science and artificial intelligence. Its aim is to teach you to analyse and model complex problems, work with large volumes of data and develop solutions based on mathematical and computational models.

What is the difference between studying Mathematics and studying Mathematics and Data Science?

A Mathematics degree provides in-depth training in mathematical disciplines such as algebra, analysis, geometry, probability and statistics. The Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Data Science at UIC Barcelona retains this rigorous mathematical foundation but connects it from the outset with programming, machine learning, artificial intelligence, modelling and data analysis, strengthening its technological and professional applications.

Why study Mathematics and Data Science?

Because it combines mathematical reasoning with some of the fastest-developing areas of technology, such as data science and artificial intelligence. This education enables you not only to use tools and algorithms but also to understand the principles behind them, analyse problems and develop new solutions.

What career opportunities does the Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Data Science offer?

Graduates can pursue careers in areas such as data science, artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, mathematical modelling, finance, healthcare, technology, industry, the public sector and research. The combination of mathematics, statistics and programming provides a quantitative skill set that can be applied across a wide range of sectors.

Can I work in artificial intelligence after studying Mathematics and Data Science?

Yes. Mathematics is one of the foundations of artificial intelligence and machine learning. During the degree, you will study areas such as probability, statistics, optimisation, programming, machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing and computer vision, among others, to understand how these models work and learn to use them. Value proposition (3)

What is the difference between Mathematics and Data Science and Computer Engineering?

Computer Engineering focuses primarily on the development and operation of computer systems and technologies. Mathematics and Data Science focuses on mathematical reasoning, modelling, statistics and data analysis, incorporating programming and artificial intelligence as tools for solving complex problems.

Does the Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Data Science include company placements?

Yes. The degree includes a semester of professional placements in a company, allowing you to apply what you have learnt in a professional setting, tackle real-world problems and gain experience before graduating.

Is the degree practical or mainly theoretical?

It combines a rigorous mathematical foundation with a practical, career-oriented approach. Throughout the degree, you will work on projects and problems that enable you to apply mathematics, programming and data to specific situations, as well as completing a semester-long professional placement in a company.

Which Bachillerato pathway is recommended for studying Mathematics and Data Science?

The degree is particularly aimed at students from the science and technology pathways of the Spanish Bachillerato who are interested in mathematics, technology, data, programming or artificial intelligence. It is especially suitable for students with analytical ability, curiosity and an enjoyment of problem-solving. Value proposition (3)

Do I need to know how to code before starting the degree?

I would not present coding knowledge as an entry requirement unless the Faculty has explicitly confirmed it. For GEO, we can give a more reliable answer: an interest in technology and programming is a very good fit for this degree, as programming is part of the curriculum and is used to implement mathematical solutions and work with data.

Who is the Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Data Science for?

It is for students who enjoy mathematics, like solving problems and want to understand how things work, while also seeking to connect these abilities with data, artificial intelligence and technology, and pursue a clear professional path.

Why study Mathematics and Data Science in Barcelona?

Barcelona brings together universities, companies, research centres and an ecosystem linked to technology, data, healthcare, industry and innovation, making it a particularly attractive city in which to develop mathematical and technological expertise.

Why study Mathematics and Data Science at UIC Barcelona?

Because the degree offers a clear combination: solid mathematics + data science + artificial intelligence + career-focused training. It also provides an applied learning model, individual student support and a semester-long professional placement in a company. The aim is to train professionals who can understand technology, rather than simply use it, and apply mathematics to real-world problems. Value proposition (3)

Will mathematics still offer career opportunities as artificial intelligence advances?

Artificial intelligence makes understanding the mathematical foundations of models even more important. A strong mathematical education enables you to reason, build models, interpret results and evaluate the solutions provided by new technologies, as well as adapt to tools that will continue to evolve.

What can I do after graduating in Mathematics and Data Science?

You can enter the job market in roles involving data, AI, analytics, modelling and technology, apply your quantitative skills in sectors such as finance, healthcare or industry, or continue your education through master’s degrees and research.
