Business-minded, analytical and proactive: the keys to being a good entrepreneur open the 2022 Emprèn series

With “Key skills and abilities for an entrepreneur” the department of Alumni & Careers has inaugurated the Emprèn 2022 series. On this occasion, Ignasi Belda, entrepreneur, and Ramon Saltor, CEO of Dozen Investments, were the speakers at the panel moderated by Isabella Meneghel, lecturer at UIC Barcelona. The session took place on 17 May in the Aula Magna of the university.

The speakers had very different but complementary profiles and outlined the keys to being an entrepreneur: being business-minded, having an analytical mind, being proactive and working well in a team.

Saltor, with a long experience of investing in new companies, stressed the importance of the founding team being able to “work with short- and long-term objectives, constantly reviewing and making decisions accordingly”. The CEO of Dozen took the opportunity to describe the origins of the start-up Glovo, a company they invested in during its initial phase: “Since we have known them, even with a small staff of seven employees, they analysed results each week and set targets for the next one.”

Belda spoke about the spin-off MiWendo, a company in which he has been co-founder and CEO for the past three years. “It is an example of public-private collaboration involving four universities, two researchers and someone with an entrepreneurial profile like mine.” Belda, who is a lecturer at UIC Barcelona, also highlighted the sound foundations that students of biomedicine have. “At this university they end up knowing perfectly what a spin-off is, a patent, a balance sheet and a media strategy: all that prepares them for the entrepreneurial business world.”

At the end of the session, the moderator delved into the more human side of both profiles and addressed the number of jobs generated thanks to small investments. Because, as Saltor put it, “participating in companies that started with few employees and now have more than a thousand gives you the sensation of being involved in big changes and makes our work all the more satisfying.”

The second session of the series will take place on 8 June and will deal with intra-enterprise: innovation within companies. The 2022 Emprèn series is an initiative supported by Santander Universities and organised by the Department of Alumni & Careers of UIC Barcelona.
