Commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the death of Marià Fortuny i Marsal at the Ateneu Barcelonès

Marià Fortuny (1838-1874) was one of the most important painters of his time and one of the most internationally renowned.  To celebrate the 150th anniversary of his death, the Faculty of Humanities is organising an exhibition and two lectures at the Ateneu Barcelonès about his career and influences.

EXHIBITION INAUGURATION | 21st May

  • 19.00 h | Carraige entrance (Ateneu Barcelonès)


The activity will begin with a historical re-enactment at 6.30 p.m. in front of the bust of Fortuny on Pintor Fortuny at the corner of Xuclà, which will guide visitors to the Ateneu for the inauguration of the exhibition. 

The exhibition is structured in several thematic panels that deal with different aspects of the artist: Fortuny's education, official commissions, technique, orientalism, his trips to Granada, Rome and Naples and his influences, as well as his legacy found in other painters.

“Marià Fortuny: Modernity Divided” Francesc Quílez, curator of the Fortuny Year. Quílez will deal with the theme of modernity in the painter, his brushstroke, the themes in his work and his extraordinary virtuosity. 

  • 6.15 p.m. | Pompeu Fabra Room (Ateneu Barcelonès) 

“Fortuny after Fortuny” Dr Sergio Fuentes, deputy director of Sala Parés. Fuentes will talk about the contemporary and later artists who were influenced by Fortuny and how they showed it in their painting.
