Dr Toni Mora, new dean of the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences
The director of the Institute for Research in Evaluation and Public Policies, Dr Toni Mora, was recently named dean of the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences, a position he held between 2013 and 2016 and to which he has returned to “consolidate the Faculty’s international projects”
Professor and researcher Toni Mora has been linked to UIC Barcelona since 2003. During his more than 20 years at the University he has held numerous positions, which he has combined with teaching and research. From 2008 to 2013, he served as vice-dean of the Faculty, later taking over as dean until 2016. A full professor of Applied Economics at UIC Barcelona since 2017, Toni Mora is director of the Institute for Research in Evaluation and Public Policies (IRAPP), whose aim is to improve individual and social decisions regarding health and education through multidisciplinary research.
As the new dean, Toni Mora will strive to “consolidate the Faculty’s international projects”, one of the cornerstones of UIC Barcelona. As a professor of statistical and econometric methods in the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences, he urges new students to face the challenges of AI head on and place value on “personal sacrifice and teamwork”. “At UIC Barcelona, we are in close contact with students and establish a personal relationship between students and teaching staff,” the new dean added.
Toni Mora also heads the IRAPP, which promotes research cooperation in the fields of health and education. “We want to consolidate the projects we have and create new partnerships with public authorities, particularly the Ministry of Health,” explains the director. As a researcher and expert in health economics and education economics, he analyses population data and works regularly and continuously with public authorities.
To Toni Mora, research is a crucial part of the University. Examples of some of the research projects in which the IRAPP has recently been involved include an assessment of the impact of taxation on sugary drinks; an assessment of the use of laptops with Educat software in the classroom; and the role of public health campaigns on influenza vaccinations among the elderly, among others. The professor has also worked with clinics at Bellvitge Hospital, Hospital Clínic and the Doctor Josep Trueta University Hospital in Girona, as well as with organisations such as the Red Cross.
Toni Mora is currently drafting a report with the Agency for Health Quality and Assessment of Catalonia (AQuAS) on the use of the La Meva Salut platform and the eConsulta service, in which more than 26 million doctor-patient conservations have been analysed and whose findings are due for publication shortly.
